Little Pros Spanish Program
In an ever-growing diverse population, knowledge of other languages and cultures
is very important. As the Hispanic population in the United States continues to
grow, familiarity with the Spanish Language and the Hispanic Culture is
essential. Child development research indicates that early exposure (birth to
six years) to a second language is beneficial and aids in learning the second
language as the child becomes older (six to ten years). This suggests that
young children should be exposed early to a second language, thus strengthening
their language acquisition capability in future years.
At Little Pros Academy, children two years and older have the unique
opportunity to participate in a daily Spanish Program. This program allows
young children to become acquainted with another language and culture. The
Spanish Program focuses on functional language skills and culture. As young
children are active learners, the Spanish Instructor implements activities,
which are meaningful, hands-on, and fun. The Spanish Program is integrated with
our Educational Curriculum, the Movement Program, and the Sports Program.
Music & Movement
Each Spanish class includes a Music & Movement time in which music
appreciation, and fun are emphasized and encouraged. Children are engaged in
activities that focus on cognitive skills such as language, listening,
counting, sequencing, patterning, identifying, recognizing, recalling,
reciting, and predicting of the Spanish language and culture. With the
introduction of developmentally appropriate musical instruments and music from
various genres, children begin to develop an appreciation for and interest in
music. Creativity and self-expression are developed through music and movement,
as well.
Cooking
Children are given many opportunities to experiment with “everyday” kitchen and
household materials and tools (i.e., bowls, measuring cups, spoons, tongs,
etc.). Developmentally appropriate cooking activities during Spanish time are
planned for children to manipulate these materials and tools to learn and
practice self-help skills, to develop their motor skills, and to acquire basic
cognitive skills associated with math and science (i.e., weight, measurement,
conservation, etc.). Children also participate regularly in fun and safe
cooking activities. They help “read” recipes, “cook”, serve, and clean-up.
Spanish cooking projects occur once a month.
